TO ABORT THE PROGRAM, HIT THE ESC KEY OR TYPE "Q". TO DISPLAY THESE
INSTRUCTIONS FROM THE PROGRAM, TYPE "H" OR "I".

TOMMY'S TERRACES IS A GOOD OLD FASHIONED CANNONBALL GAME. IT IS A GAME
OF ATTRITION. EACH SIDE HAS 21 GUNS MOUNTED ON TERRACES CUT INTO A HILLSIDE.
THE OBJECT IS SIMPLY TO BLOW ALL THE OTHER SIDE'S GUNS TO SMITHEREENS.
DISPLAYS:
THE PLAYER IS ALWAYS ON THE LEFT HILL, THE COMPUTER ON THE RIGHT.
EACH ROW OR COLUMN ON THE SCREEN INITIALLY REPRESENTS 250 FEET.
THE CENTER SECTION OF THE SCREEN IS THE 'CUTOUT ZONE' COMPRESSING THE
MILES OF TERRITORY BETWEEN THE HILLS (NOTHING MUCH HAPPENS THERE ANYWAY).
THE NUMBER AT THE BOTTOM OF THE CUTOUT ZONE IS THE TOTAL NUMBER OF SHELLS
IN THE AIR AT THE TIME.
THE BOTTOM LINES DISPLAY THE PLAYER'S DESIGNATED CANNON (SEE BELOW), ITS
ELEVATION, THE GUN BARREL VELOCITY IN MPH (IT CHANGES FROM GAME TO GAME),
THE LETHAL RADIUS FOR SHELLS (SEE BELOW), THE WIND SPEED IN MPH, THE DISTANCE
BETWEEN THE LEFT SIDE OF THE SCREEN AND THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE CUTOUT ZONE IN
MILES (IT CHANGES FROM GAME TO GAME), AND THE CLOCK.
CONTROLS:
AS THE COMMANDER OF THE HILL YOU CAN AIM EACH OF YOUR CANNONS BY CHANGING
ITS ELEVATION. (ELEVATION IS MEASURED IN DEGREES ABOVE HORIZONTAL IN THE
LINE OF SIGHT.)
TO DESIGNATE A CANNON FOR AIMING, USE THE LEFT AND RIGHT ARROW KEYS: THE
DESIGNATED CANNON IS ALWAYS HIGHLIGHTED. IF A CANNON POSITION HAS BEEN
OBLITERATED, THE NEXT AVAILABLE CANNON IS AUTOMATICALLY JUMPED TO.
TO CHANGE THE ELEVATION, USE THE UP AND DOWN ARROW KEYS. THE CANNON'S NUMBER
AND ELEVATION ARE DISPLAYED ON THE BOTTOM LINE ON THE LEFT HAND SIDE.
OF COURSE THE ENEMY ALSO HAS ITS OWN DESIGNATED CANNON; IT IS IMPORTANT TO
THE OUTCOME OF THE GAME ONLY IN GAME MODES 3 AND 4 (SEE BELOW).
GAME MODES:
THERE ARE FOUR MODES OF PLAY:
1. ROUNDS. EACH PLAYER SHOOTS ONE CANNON IN TURN. THE CANNON FIRED
IS ALWAYS THE DESIGNATED CANNON.
2. FREE FOR ALL. EACH SIDE SHOOTS AS ABLE. THE CANNON FIRED IS
RANDOMLY SELECTED, WITH THE FRACTION OF TIMES THAT THE DESIGNATED
CANNONS ARE FIRED BEING SELECTED VIA FUNCTION KEY.
3. CHICKEN-1. SAME AS 1 EXCEPT GAME IS OVER IF A DESIGNATED CANNON IS
DESTROYED (IN MODES 1 AND 2 IT ISN'T).
4. CHICKEN-2. SAME AS 2 EXCEPT GAME IS OVER IF A DESIGNATED CANNON IS
DESTROYED.
FUNCTION KEYS:
THE FUNCTION KEY ASSIGNMENTS ARE AS FOLLOWS:
FN KEY # FUNCTION
F1 SOUND EFFECTS ON/OFF TOGGLE (THE FUNCTION KEY LEGEND DISPLAYS
THE MODE THAT WILL BE ENABLED IF THE KEY IS PRESSED, I.E., THE
MODE THAT IS NOT ACTIVE).
F2 GAME MODE SELECT SWITCH (THE FUNCTION KEY LEGEND ALWAYS
DISPLAYS THE MODE THAT IS CURRENTLY ACTIVE).
F3,F4 DECREASE/INCREASE LETHAL RADIUS FOR CANNON SHELLS. ANY GUN
WITHIN THIS RADIUS WHEN THE SHELL HITS WILL BE OBLITERATED
FROM THE EXPLOSION OF ITS AMMO DUMP. NOTE THAT INCREASING THE
RADIUS DOES NOT NECESSARY MAKE IT MORE DIFFICULT TO WIN HENCE
THIS KEY IS NOT LABELLED DIFFICULTY LEVEL.
F5,F6 DECREASE/INCREASE DESIGNATED CANNON DUTY CYCLE OR
FRACTION OF TOTAL SHOTS THAT THE DESIGNATED CANNON GETS IN
FREE FOR ALL MODE.
F7,F8 DECREASE/INCREASE MESH SIZE. THE MESH SIZE IS USED TO
FRACTIONALLY STEP THE CANNON BALL WHEN IT APPROACHES A TARGET
TO DECREASE THE PROBABILITY THAT IT WILL SKIP OVER AN ENEMY
GUN.
F9,F10 DECREASE/INCREASE SIMULATION SPEED. PERMITS YOU TO SLOW DOWN
THE ACTION IF DESIRED.
OTHER COMMANDS:
A: TOGGLES AUTO MODE, IN WHICH THE DESIGNATED LEFT SIDE CANNON CHANGES
AUTOMATICALLY (AS WELL AS THE RIGHT SIDE CANNON).
F: TOGGLES THE FINE TUNE MODE FOR SETTING THE ELEVATION. IN FINE TUNE
MODE, THE UP AND DOWN ARROW KEYS CHANGE THE ELEVATION BY .1 DEGREE
RATHER THAN 1 DEGREE.
H OR I: DISPLAY THESE INSTRUCITONS.
ESC OR Q: QUITS THE PROGRAM.
R: RESTARTS THE GAME.
S: TO CHANGE X DISPLAY SCALE FACTOR (NUMBER OF SIMULATED FEET PER COLUMN ON
SCREEN).
W: FOR TOGGLING THE WIND EFFECT CALCULATION ON/OFF.

S START UP WITH SOUND OFF
M FORCE MONO DISPLAY MODE
C FORCE COLOR DISPLAY MODE
